We had a great meeting at Wilson Community College on October 1, 2019. We started off by reviewing our successes from 2018-2019, and then discussed proposed plans for 2019-2020. Turning Point WDB Director Michael Williams called for a vote to approve the plans, and they were approved by the partners in attendance.
Larry Donley, NEPZ Regional Operations Director for NCWorks Centers, explained our local implementation process and announced our newest recipients. Northeastern WDB Director David Whitmer assisted with presenting certificates to partners in the Halifax Community College area for their Health Care local implementation and in the Edgecombe Community College area for their Advanced Manufacturing local implementation.
Unfortunately, Wayne Rollins (Region Q WDB) was unable to join us to discuss the data. However, he was kind enough to write out the information in a document for our review.
2019 Presentation for Career Pathways Explanation by the Numbers
Lisa Lassister (Vidant Health) was also unable to join us due to a scheduling conflict, but she prepared a statement which was read for the partners in the room.
Greetings and my apologies for you hearing my statements from a written document verses in person
Charles Gilmore (Sara Lee) shared a bit of his story, and how thankful he was for having someone expose him to a skills training program at a local community college. He also explained the process for hiring at Sara Lee and noted a connection with a local high school where Sara Lee is helping provide culinary tools.
Crystal Lyons (Reser’s) shared with us about the internship program for the business office that they have recently implemented. She shared some of the lessons they’ve learned, like making sure students understand the environment (it’s cold) and are willing to work there. They have high hopes for the future of this program and look forward to continuing it.
Robert Hiett (Upper Coastal Plains COG) shared information about NC Simulation Station, a partnership focused on using video games for career exposure and awareness activities. He also provided a demonstration of the Farming Simulator game after the meeting. We are working to provide access to this simulation at the Northeast Ag Expo in November also. If your organization is interested in attending the Expo, click here. See his slides in the PPT (below) for more information.
